Commissioning a Custom Piece

We accept a limited number of custom commissions each year and carefully consider each project to ensure the best possible result.

Begin with an Inquiry

To start, please send us an email with as much detail as possible about your project, including:

  • The type of piece you have in mind

  • Approximate dimensions or use

  • Desired wood species

  • Reference images or links to pieces in our portfolio (helpful but optional)

This initial message helps us understand your needs and determine if your project is a good fit. We’ll respond within 48 hours to discuss next steps, including a rough cost estimate, timeframe, and whether a phone or video call is appropriate.

The Commission Process

Our process is designed to be collaborative, transparent, and respectful of both your time and ours:

1. Design Deposit
Once we agree to move forward, we require a $250 design and deposit fee. This holds your place in our build queue, allows us to refine the design, and includes sketches of the proposed piece. The design deposit is credited toward the final price.

2. Production Deposit
About 30 days before production begins, we’ll confirm final details and send an invoice for 50% of the total price (minus the initial deposit). Production generally begins around 4–6 months after the inquiry, depending on our schedule.

3. Completion & Balance
The remaining balance is due upon completion, including applicable Virginia sales tax and delivery fees if necessary.

Delivery & Shipping

Local delivery is included for small pieces within a 50-mile radius of our Springfield, VA studio. Larger local pieces may carry a small delivery fee to cover truck and labor costs. For clients outside our area, we can provide delivery estimates or arrange custom crating as needed.

Warranty & Service

We guarantee our workmanship under normal use. While we do not repair or refinish work by other makers, we’re happy to advise on care and longevity to help your piece last for generations.

Immediate Availability

Occasionally we have finished pieces (often from shows) that are available immediately. If you’re interested in an available piece or want it shipped to you, please include that in your initial inquiry.
