Contemporary Windsor Chair at Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute

Build a contemporary Windsor chair with chairmaker Michael Jury. This class will mix both traditional and contemporary construction techniques to create an attractive and comfortable chair. Students will learn the fundamentals of Windsor chair construction and use a variety of hand tools to shape the components of the chair.
While most traditional Windsor chairs are made with green wood, this chair will be made from kiln dried walnut and ash. Students will learn how to rive spindles from a kiln dried board. They will also learn bent lamination techniques to shape the crest of the back.
All tools and supplies will be provided. However, if you would like to bring your own tools, we recommend the following:

Learn the basics of Windsor chair construction while building this handsome, modern chair in five days
Learn to simulate green woodworking techniques using kiln-dried boards
Shape spindles and carve the seat by hand
Learn proper grain orientation and how to manipulate the moisture content of the parts for long-lasting joinery
All tools and materials will be provided. Students can choose from walnut or cherry for the seat and crest. Undercarriage and spindles will be ash.
No prior woodworking experience required
